The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson is book 1 of The Remnant Chronicles. I have not read other books from this author so this was my first. There was a lot of hype in the BookTube community but I did not pick up the book instantly, instead I waited for the floppy paperback version. So a little insight that I know before reading this book is that the both the male interests in this book are not specified and kept mysterious until the end of the book. I thought this was an interesting way of writing the book.
So there are three point of views in this book, the heroine Lia, the prince and the assassin. Lia's point of view is clearly written for the readers, where else you have to guess the other two person. I enjoyed the male characters' point of view more than Lia's and this is mainly because it's so fun to guess who is who. Both males sound so similar but with a bit of difference here and there yet still it was hard to tell. They have different features but it's not a good enough clue to tell them apart. So character wise I quite like them, Lia had quite a growth but the two male are just a scratch at the surface, there's more to them for sure which are not revealed yet.
As for the plot, I felt the story started off a tad slow, my guess is the author wanted to familiarise the readers with the world that the book is set in. The book did not capture my attention well until a major twist happened. After that twist, everything was so exciting to read about, it kept me at my toes. I would say that the plot had a slow ascend and a fast moving descend which I feel it's quite understandable for a first book in a series. The direction of the story is good and I loved the ending, the suspense was excellent.
Overall, the world is unique and the approach to the book is interesting. I did enjoy this book and it was a good page turner for second half of the book. The trope of a princess running away from arranged marriage is a bit boring but when the story moved away from it, it was fantastic. I really love that I did not know who was who but I was happy that I managed to make the right guess. I also like that there are secrets in the story that slowly unravels because if it was only about the princess falling in love and the readers had to guess who was the guy, that's boring. I would recommend this book if you love figuring out characters in a book. If you are a reader who likes things to be straight forward then it might be annoying and maybe frustrating for you. If you are a fantasy lover then you would like this book. I definitely look forward to the second book.
